Guide to Holiday Travel with the Elderly
During the busy holiday season, don’t let your elderly family travel alone. While airlines have the best of intentions, when travel season gets busy, niceties disappear.
At large airports like Atlanta, passengers in wheelchairs get backed up, and are herded in groups to waiting areas, where they can stay for long periods of time. They are then taken by second crews to their gates. While porters are helpful, they are not trained to help with the bathroom. If your family member sufferers even a slight bit of dementia, they will not be able to advocate for the services they need, and other passengers will get priority. On board or at the gate, airline staffs cannot give medicine or shots; don’t take a risk that your plane “will make it on time.”
This means that while your family relation will be technically supervised, they will not have the individual attention they need. Silver Line, however, takes a personal approach:
- Our uniformed staff will pick up and deliver your family member to their destination, the whole way. No substitutions.
- Our staff will see to it that during the journey, all medications are taken. This is particularly important with patients with diabetes.
- Our staff will ensure that your family member gets seated and treated well on the plane. While airline staff are accommodating, Silver Line staff can make sure that there is no risk of any dangers on the plane, such as clotting, which can occur if patients do not move or stretch during the flight.
- Our staff is trained with the level of care that is necessary. Some travelers require only simple companions with no medical training, others need the services of a CNA or Registered Nurse. We take extra precautions, and will discuss the level of care necessary with your family physician.
- Meals are included! We will ensure that your family member eats properly during the journey. This is not only medically necessary, but can mean the difference between your parents arriving home for Christmas in a good mood, or a not-so-good mood.
- We are not just about making sure that the medical issues are taken care of. Silver Line staff are true travel companions, and will entertain your family member through the entire trip.
